Orthodontics

Correction of malocclusions

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (imperfect closures or "bites") which may be due to irregularities of the teeth, a lack of harmony in the relationship between the jaw bones (mandible and maxilla), or both conditions.

Treatment focuses on correcting the positioning of the teeth, but can also involve controlling and modifying facial growth, and is more appropriately defined as dentofacial orthopaedics.

Orthodontic appliances can be of various types: fixed, removable, intra-oral, extra-oral, clear, invisible and lingual (applied to the inner surface of the teeth and therefore not visible).

The reasons that may lead to undertaking this type of treatment can be aesthetic, aimed at improving overall appearance, but the correction of function and consequently of chewing represents an equally important benefit.

Treatment can be carried out on both growing patients (children) and adult patients, based on clinical indications.
