Health of the supporting tissues

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry concerned with promoting, restoring and maintaining the health of the supporting tissues of the teeth (gum, bone, periodontal ligament). The practice employs both surgical and non-surgical therapies.

Gingivitis

It is the inflammation of the superficial soft tissues (gum) caused by the presence of bacterial plaque and tartar (calcified plaque). It manifests with reddened, swollen, bleeding and in some cases painful gums.

Periodontitis

It is the inflammation of the deep tissues (bone, periodontal ligament). Commonly known as "pyorrhoea", if left untreated it can lead to tooth loss. It manifests with: gum inflammation, deep periodontal pockets, abscesses, halitosis, gum recession, tooth mobility, bone loss.

Gum recession

It is the recession of the gum along the root of the tooth, which therefore remains exposed to the oral environment. It can cause: aesthetic concerns, thermal sensitivity to hot/cold foods, mechanical abrasion, root caries, chronic inflammation, bone loss, tooth loss.
